2011 International Conference /n on Spinal Cord Medicine & Rehabilitation
ASIA President's Message



Dear Colleagues:

Officer KennellyIn 2011, for the first time, Washington, D.C. will serve as host for the International Conference on Spinal Cord Medicine and Rehabilitation, a combined meeting of the International Spinal Cord Society (ISCoS), and the American Spinal Injury Association (ASIA).  A special feature of the conference will be a full pre-course day entitled:  “The State of the Science in SCI Rehabilitation:  Informing a New Research Agenda.”  The meeting will mark the 50th anniversary of ISCoS, and is the 37th annual scientific meeting of ASIA.

Under the leadership of the Program Committee of ASIA, Chaired by Michael Haak, MD, and the Scientific Committee of ISCoS, Chaired by Susan Charlifue, Ph.D., the conference will focus on the overall theme:  “From the Past to the Future—Achievements to Date, Challenges of the Present, Vision for the Future.”  Topics will include neurourology, the autonomic system, respiratory management, and survival/life expectancy.  Additional topics are:  spine surgery, translational research, pediatrics and adolescents, and  assistive technology.  Broad range panel sessions will include experts from across surgical specialties and nonsurgical disciplines, and will focus on key clinical and nonclinical topics in spinal cord medicine and rehabilitation.  The Named Lectures will be delivered by renowned experts.  Didactic and skills-oriented Instructional Courses will concentrate on important domains and help attendees advance their knowledge and acquire new skills.  Scientific papers in general sessions, as well as scientific posters will also be presented, on a variety of pertinent subjects. 

The outstanding educational program, which includes special opportunities to interact with experts, and the ability to reconnect with professional colleagues, will make the 2011 International Conference on Spinal Cord Medicine and Rehabilitation an essential meeting for all practicing members of the international spinal cord medicine and rehabilitation community.  On behalf of the American Spinal Injury Association, I would like to extend to you our warmest invitation to join us in Washington, D.C. for this unique event.  I look forward to seeing you at the conference.
